Dear Daddy, I love you

Please be gentle and kind with me. I am young. I am learning. Have patience please. I will learn. I am developing and it’s hard sometimes to listen and to remember.

I don’t mean to disrespect you or anger you. That is never my intention. My motives are pure and innocent. I don’t want to cause you frustration, but I do want to have fun, be stimulated, try things on my own…and have your attention.

I love it when you look at me with a smile. I love when you talk with me. I love when you listen to my stories, and I love hearing your stories. I like playing with you and being curious with you. I love your hugs.

You are my safety. I want to trust you. I look up to you. I learn from you and your example.

Sometimes I have big feelings and I can’t control myself. I want to release my emotion through crying or yelling or stomping. This is how I express myself and show you how I’m feeling. Can you see me for who I am? Can you love me even when it’s hard to love me?

I’m not trying to be difficult, I just don’t have the skills yet to understand myself and express myself well. Please show me through your behavior the way to be. I will learn.

I love you Daddy,

  1. This hit home hard tonight for Shane and I. Thanks for this gentle, eloquent reminder that kids are still learning and aren’t trying to be difficult. Wise words, my friend:)
